The predecessor of School of Landscape Architecture is ‘School of Gardening’ which was co-founded in 1951 by School of Gardening of Beijing Agricultural University (now China Agricultural University) and School of Construction of Tsinghua University. In 1956, ‘School of Gardening’ was transferred to Beijing Forestry College (now Beijing Forestry University). There are five disciplines in the school, they are Landscape Architecture, Architecture, Urban Planning, Ornamental Horticulture, Tourism Management. In 2012 China Discipline Ranking by Chinese Ministry of Education, both Landscape Architecture and Forestry (with Ornamental Horticulture as its secondary discipline) of Beijing Forestry University ranked the first.

After more than 60 years development, the school has formed a training pattern of multi-level and multi-specification with undergraduates, postgraduates, MLA, doctoral students and international students. At present, the school can offer postdoc research station and confer doctoral degree in Landscape Architecture and Ornamental Horticulture. The school can also confer master degree in Urban Planning, Architecture and Tourism Management, professional degree in Landscape Architecture and Tourism Management, and confer bachelor degree of Landscape Architecture, Landscape Gardening, Urban Planning, Ornamental Horticulture and Tourism Management.

At present, the school has more than 3000 students, including 2000 undergraduates, 350 academic MLA candidates, 200 professional MLA candidates, 150 PhD candidates and 300 on-job postgraduates. Since 1988, students in our school has won first prize 9 times at the students competition held by International Federation of Landscape Architecture (IFLA) which is the world’s highest level of landscape design. Meanwhile, they has often awarded success in domestic and foreign student competitions.

With more than 60 years development, the school has 3 academicians, a large number of academic and industry leaders, as well as experts and well-known entrepreneurs. At present, the school has developed a high academic level and reasonable age and educational background structure teacher group with academician, national outstanding contribution expert and doctoral supervisor. Of 140 teachers and staff, there are 1 academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, 23 professors, 46 associate professors and 53 lectures. Among them, there are 1 the highest honor IFLA Sir Geoffrey Jellicoe Award winner, 1 national key talent project candidate, 4 State Department special allowance experts, 4 Baosteel Education Fund outstanding teacher award winners, 4 Beijing Prominent Educator award winners and so on.

The school has many Teaching and Research platforms and research institutions, such as National Engineering Research Center for Floriculture, Urban and Rural Ecological Environment Beijing Laboratory, National Landscape Architecture Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center, Research Center of landscape Architectural Design and Planning, Famous Flowers Research Center. At the same time, some research institutions, academic communities and industrial association, such as National MLA Education Steering Committee, Educational Sub-commission of Chinese Society of Landscape Architecture (CHSLA) and China Association of Flower Arrangement Art (CAFAA) are affiliated to our school.
